SUBJECT: Schedule Proposal for General Goodpaster
General Andrew Goodpaster will be in Washington on March 26 to testify
before a subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee. He has
informed General Haig in the message at Tab B that he would greatly
appreciate the opportunity to meet with the President that afternoon.
In my opinion, the suggested meeting would be useful not only because it
would allow the President to review current NATO/SHAPE issues with
Goodpaster but also because the press coverage would offer another
indication of the importance the President continues to attach to NATO/
Atlantic Alliance issues.
If you agree, the schedule proposal for your signature to the President at
Tab A would recommend that he meet with General Goodpaster.
Jan Lodal (Ben Huberman for) concurs.
RECOMMENDATION
1. That you sign the schedule proposal at Tab A.
2. With the President's approval, that General Scowcroft have the
SHAPE liaison office in the Pentagon informed that the meeting has
been scheduled.
