SUBJECT: Background Papers for the Forthcoming Trip
to the People's Republic of China
In preparation for the forthcoming trip to the People's Republic of
China, please prepare background papers on the following topics:
Chinese military developments
Sino??Soviet relations
The PRC'?s domestic political situation
Peking's foreign policy and current relations, including
U. S. -PRC relations
China's economic situation, including the status and prospects
for U. S. -PRC trade
PRC foreign military and economic aid
The Taiwan. situation
These papers may include updates of the analyses prepared in early
August for a trip at that time. These studies should be sent to the
Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs by October 10.
