According to Turkish Radio broadcasts, opium production will be resumed this fall in seven provinces. No details are yet available on whether the Turkish Government intends to introduce any safeguards to prevent diversion of the opium into illicit channels. The Turkish Government has been under pressure for some time to make this move and popular reactia within Turkey will be largely positive. US Congressional views, however, are bound to be hostile to Turkey. Ambassador Macomber has asked for an appointment to see Prime Minister Ecevit, but for the moment we are adopting the line that we are awaiting further information.
