William Rusher's Sept. 14 column, "How to watch the TV news,"attacks NBC's Ken Bode for drawing atten- tion to our October cover story, "Company Man," a feature story about Vice President' George Bush's less-than-distinguished record as di- rector of the CIA. In his rush to criticize Mr. Bode and denounce Mother Jones as a "rag" which he "wouldn't blame you for not having heard of." the colum- nist neglects to mention the sub- stance of the story: that high- ranking sources within the CIA told our reporters Mr. Bush had been "largely ineffective" as CIA chief and had "virtually turned the store over" to covert operators he was sup- posed to control. Mr. Rusher neglected to mention the credentials of our reporter, Scott Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong is a for- mer Washington post reporter, for- mer senior investigator for the Sen- ate Watergate Committee and co-author, with Bob Woodward, of "The Brethren," a celebrated book about the Supreme Court. Perhaps Mr. Rusher, who seems to think invective is a healthy substi. tute for analysis, should get around to reading the article before hurry- ing to denounce it.
