GATES Robert Michael Gates was born on 25 September 1943 in blichita, Kansas. He earned his BA degree at the College of William & Mary in 1965, his MA degree at Indiana Unive~^sity Georgetown University in 1974. Dr. Gates joined the CIA in 1966. U.S. Air Force, and later was assigned Intelligence. In 1969 he rejoined CIA policies and tactics toward the Middle in 1966, and his Ph.D. at year later he entered the CIA's Office of Current civilian analyst on Soviet East and Africa. In 1972 he joined the staff of the Special Assistant to the DCI for SALT, where he was assigned to the Department of State to serve as advisor to the U.S. SALT delegation in Vienna and Geneva. In 1973 Dr. Gates was named one of two Assistant National Intelligence Officers for Strategic Programs. In 1974 he was detailed to the National Security Council where he advised the President and the NSC in the area of US relations with the USSR and Europe. In 1976, he returned briefly to CIA Headquarters to work with the Center for Policy Support, where he developed and implemented a long-term plan for research on the USSR. In 1977, Dr. Gates was asked to return to the NSC as Special Assistant to the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, where he serves today. During his association with the NSC he served three Presidents and three Assistants to the President for National Security Affairs, and has won the praise of all of them.. Dr. Gates is married to the former Rebecca Ann Wilkie of Seattle. and Sequim, Washington. They live with their one daughter in Vienna, Virginia.
