WASHINGTON POST

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
STAT
Mt. Mr. Gates Wasn't Asked
The article "Hunt Begins for New
CIA Chief' [March 51 incorrectly
states that during acting CIA director
Robert Gates' confirmation hearings,
last month, he "refused to say flatly
he would resign if ordered to do
something illegal."
We have reviewed carefully the
transcript of Mr. Gates' hearings. He.
was never asked i he would resign in,
the event he were asked to commit an
illegality. If the question had been put
to him, he would have replied that he
would indeed resign rather than carry
out an illegal act.
GEORGE.V. LAUDER
Director, Public Affairs
