Approved For Release 2007/03/01 : CIA-RDP99-00498R000300090003--0 STAT The Director of Central Intelligence 9 November 1979 The Editor NEWSWEEK 444 Madison Avenue New York, New York 10022 Dear Sir: In your November 12th issue under the title, "Spying on U.S. Business," you quote me as saying that security checks of U.S. industrial firms are "discouraging." I would like to correct the record. That quotation was from a speech made in August of 1977, not-today. Since that speech in 1977, I have been very encouraged by the responsiveness of U.S. industry to new emphasis on industrial security. The results have been impressive. I no longer find the situation "discouraging." Instead it is heartening. Prepared in 0/DCI.
