A. (U) A 3-YEAR COURSE IN HUMAN BODY ENGINEERING IS EXPECTED TO
EDUCATE TALENTED PERSONNEL FOR A HUMAN BODY ENGINEERING RESEARCH
CENTER WHICH IS DESIGNED TO BE CHINA'S CENTER OF RESEARCH ON
EXTRAORDINARY CAPABILITIES OF THE HUMAN BODY. IN 1988 THE COURSE
ACCEPTED ITS FIRST STUDENTS, AGED 16 TO 30, FROM ACROSS THE NATION
(TKP REPORTED THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS AS 16; WHB REPORTED THE NUMBER
AS 20). ALL STUDENTS HAVE EITHER DEMONSTRATED SOME SPECIAL ABILITY
OR HAVE BEEN LEARNING QIGONG. THE CURRICULA INCLUDE A GENERAL
KNOWLEDGE OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE AN9 WESTERN MEDICINES, THE YIJING
(STC 2496 4842) (THE BOOK OF CHANGES, ONE OF THE FIVE CHINESE
CLASSICS), BAGUA (STC 0360 0597) (THE EIGHT DIAGRAMS, EIGHT
COMBINATIONS OF THREE WHOLE OR BROKEN LINES USED IN DIVINATION),
COMPUTERS, AND QIGONG.
B. (U) THE PRECURSOR TO THE HUMAN BODY ENGINEERING RESEARCH
CENTER WAS THE QIGONG RESEARCH CENTER ESTABLISHED 2 YEARS EARLIER AT
SHENZHEN UNIVERSITY. THE NEW FACILITY IS DESIGNED TO BE AN
INTEGRATED BASE FOR EDUCATION, SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, AND TRAINING. IT
WILL DIAGNOSE AND TREAT PATIENTS USING CLAIRVOYANCE, ACUPUNCTURE,
AND TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE. ((LUO ZHENGQI (STC 5012 1794
0796), PRESIDENT OF SHENZHEN UNIVERSITY, AND ((LIU)) HEQIAO (STC
0491 7729 5062), DEPUTY COMMANDER OF THE GUANGZHOU MILITARY REGION,
WERE AMONG THE GUESTS AT THE OPENING CEREMONY FOR THE HUMAN BODY
ENGINEERING RESEARCH CENTER.
4. (U) AN AUGUST 1988 CHINESE SOURCE (QZ, P. 353) REPORTED THAT
CHINA'S QIGONG SCIENCE RESEARCH CENTER (LOCATION NOT IDENTIFIED) WAS
ESTABLISHED ON 26 MAY 1988 AS A SUBORDINATE ORGANIZATION OF THE
CHINESE SOCIETY OF QIGONG SCIENCE. CHAIRMAN ZHANG ZHENHUAN OF THE
LATTER ORGANIZATION BECAME DIRECTOR OF THE QIGONG SCIENCE RESEARCH
CENTER. THE MISSIONS OF THIS NEW CENTER ARE TO COORDINATE VARIOUS
STUDIES ON QIGONG SCIENCE AND CONSTRUCT INFORMATION NETWORKS,
EVALUATE AND DISSEMINATE QIGONG SCIENCE RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS, AND
PROVIDE RELATED ADVICE AND SUGGESTIONS.
5. (U) ACCORDING TO NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER CHINESE SOURCES (KR, P.
1; WWP, P. 1), ((ZHANG)) CHUNYAN (STC 1728 2504 1750) OF THE BEIJING
ACADEMY OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE, BEIJING, DISCOVERED A THIRD
PATH THAT DIFFERS FROM THE NERVOUS SYSTEM AND MERIDIAN SYSTEM (MAIN
AND COLLATERAL VITAL ENERGY CHANNELS) IN THE BODY, WHICH IS PROVING
TO BE OF GREAT VALUE IN TREATING HARD-TO-CURE DISEASES. ZHANG
PRESENTED HIS HYPOTHESIS ABOUT THE THIRD PATH AT THE FIRST WORLD
CONVENTION ON ACUPUNCTURE HELD IN OCTOBER 1987 (LOCATION NOT
IDENTIFIED), GARNERING THE ATTENTION OF WORLD SPECIALISTS.
6. (U) A SEPTEMBER 1988 CHINESE SOURCE (ZQ, PP. 2-6) PUBLISHED THE

DIMENSIONS ARE NOT AN INTEGER OF FOUR BUT A FRACTION," BY ((LI))
FULI (STC 2621 4395 0448) OF THE CHINESE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
UNIVERSITY, CHENGDU.
COMMENTS: (FIELD COMMENTS)--1. (U) AT ABOUT THE TIME WHEN THE
CHINESE SOCIETY OF QIGONG SCIENCE (PARA 2) WAS STARTED IN APRIL
1987, ITS CHAIRMAN, ZHANG ZHENHUAN, CALLED FOR THE PROMOTION OF
QIGONG EDUCATION BY THE STATE ED CATION COMMISSION, ESPECIALLY ATT
INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING
SEP 88). CHINA ALSO ELEVATED THE HUMAN BODY SCIENCES IN ING
QIGONG AND EXTRAORDINARY ABILITY TO THE POSITION OF A DISCIPLINE,
INAUGURATING THE CHINESE SOCIETY OF HUMAN BODY SCIENCES ON 3 MAY
1987 F_ I DTG 050401Z JAN 88). THE FACT
THAT THE THREE CENTERS DEDICATED RESEARCH AND EDUCATION OF HUMAN
BODY SCIENCES WERE ESTABLISHED RECENTLY AT UNIVERSITIES (PARAS 2, 3,
AND 4) INDICATES THAT STEADY PROGRESS HAS BEEN ACHIEVED IN THE PAST
YEAR OR SO FOLLOWING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE QIGONG SCIENCE AND
HUMAN BODY SCIENCE SOCIETIES. PARAGRAPHS 5 THROUGH 6 ALSO SHOW
CHINA'S HEIGHTENED INTEREST IN THE HUMAN BODY SCIENCES.
2. (U) THE CHINESE DEFENSE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY
ESTABLISHED THE FIRST NEW FACILITY NOTED (PARA 2). THIS SUGGESTS
THAT THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S LIBERATION ARMY POSSIBLY IS TRYING TO
EXPLOIT THE ACHIEVEMENTS IN HUMAN BODY SCIENCES FOR MILITARY
PURPOSES.
3. (U) CENTERS SIMILAR TO THE THREE NOTED TO DATE PROBABLY WILL BE
ESTABLISHED AT OTHER CHINESE UNIVERSITIES IN THE FUTURE. THE QIGONG
SCIENCE RESEARCH CENTER (PARA 4) PROBABLY WILL COORDINATE RESEARCH
COOPERATION AND THE FLOW OF RESEARCH RESULTS AMONG THESE CENTERS, IN
ACCORDANCE WITH ITS MISSION.
4. (U) THE NEW RESEARCH CENTERS ARE CLOSELY RELATED IN THAT THE
FOCUS OF THEIR RESEARCH IS SUCH UNEXPLAINED HUMAN INFORMATION
MECHANISMS AS QIGONG AND OTHER EXTRAORDINARY ABILITIES. THE
SUBSTANCE THAT PASSES THROUGH THE THIRD PATH OF THE HUMAN BODY (PARA
