Lrf)si "n sculpted f'it: of Rock in
ur4a 5ltrings, Arkansas.
ivot Rock
As far. b8-t, as the late 1801?'s, stage-
coach passgers were stopping on their
way into >1uteka Springs, Arkan,a>,, to
see Pivot Rock.
Visitors still come to have a look at this
natural oddity believed to have been
,raped by water erosion at the end of the
he Age. With an 18-foot-wide top resting
on a tiny, 18-inch base, it scents to cleft
the law of gravity.
At Pivot Rock Farms, the rock and ;:
natural bridge formation are connected 1,N
hiking trails. Owner Bill Goff says that
people come to enjoy nature along the
rails as much as they come to e he
,train attractions.
According to Goff, the area became an
,.itraction by 1895, as stagecoaches m: d
their way from Missouri to Arkamas.
-Halfway up the hill into town (Eureka
springs), the drivers would stop at the
springs, stretch their legs, and give the
,utlses water," he explains. During rile !,
,cst stop, the wandering passengers cvcn-
wally discovered the formations.
Gaff's in-laws, Robert and Beulah Mttl
tilts, bought the land in 1927. Some of the
' isilors of that sera would pack a lunch at
:lie Crescent l ? t .,in Eureka Springs and
hire parses S ., the< livery stable that
they could out. to the farm.
Over ths""'+"; many legends have been
:swciated wi ll' the area around Pivot
stock. One clahits that it served as a hide-
