SUBJECT: Hypnosis as Possible GRILL FLAME Collection Technique (S)
TO: Commander, U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command,
Arlington Hall Station, Virginia
(S) PURPOSE: To respond to the Commanding General's inquiry concerning the
possible use of hypnosis within Project GRILL FLAME.
FACTS:
1. (S/NOFORN) Hypnosis has never been used in the GRILL.FLAME program. The
protocol (approved by the Army Surgeon General's office) under which INSCOM
operates forbids the use of hypnosis and/or the use of drugs.
2. (S/NOFORN) There has been very little research in the area of hypnosis
and its possible effects on parapsychological phenomena. Self-induced states
of_relaxation is one method that is currently being studied, and, since the
level of relaxation and concentration an individual achieves seems to influence
the results obtained, this is an area we have been following with some interest.
3. (C) We have discussed the use of hypnosis, and other states of conscious-
ness, with BG(P) Rapmund, Office of Army Surgeon General, and believe he feels
that this is an appropriate area for research. Unfortunately, we cannot carry
out (nor are we equipped to do so) basic research. Hopefully, this is an area
that the GRILL FLAME DoD Committee will look at in the days ahead.
