Connected to these ports are 4 VDTs, a dot matrix printer (120 cps), and a letter quality printer (30 cps). The system also contains 1 double- density, double-sided floppy disk drive. (U) The DBMS system software is UNIX Version 7 under software license from Santa Cruz Operations. The data base management software itself is INFORMIX Version 3.05 from Relational Database Systems, Inc. (U) In a relational data base, it is conceptually convenient to think of the data existing in simple tabular form. Each table and all columns within that table are assigned unique names. Each row in the table rep- resents a new set of data. A collection of tables containing related data is defined as the data base. (U) How the data are to be distributed among the various tables is decided during a design phase of the data base creation process. There are a number of data-dependent guidelines on the optimal techniques to accomplish this, which have been published in the general DBMS literature. (U) By linking tables together, it is possible to select any (or all) rows from as many tables as necessary to satisfy possibly very complex queries of the data base. It is beyond the scope of this report to describe in detail the query formulation procedure. (U) INFORMIX consists of a number of software packages to allow for the various DBMS activities (shown in Table 1). (U) RV-Training Data Base (S) The RV-Training Data Base contains the training record of the instructor and three client-supplied students. The data are organized around the training session. For each session, data about the viewer, monitor, target site, session date, and session time are stored. Also, data are maintained for the feedback conditions, the number of observers, the training stage, an indication if redirection was used during the session, and the declared inclemency if any. (U) The name, coordinates, location, and source information are stored for each site. A given site is also described by an unlimited number of stage attributes, i.e., a site may have a single Stage 1 Phase 1 attribute and a large number of Stage 2 attributes. (S) Appendix C contains a report on the current training status for Viewers 2, 59, 326, and 743. For each viewer, the report displays Approved For Release 2000/08/08 : CS 6Ea788R001800180001-4 Approved For Release 2000/08/08 C JtrRt1?8ROO1800180001-4 (S) session and site information as a function of session type and feedback protocol. For example, Viewer 59 had 28 sessions between 9 July 1982 and 21 July 1982 on Stage 1 Phase 1 under Class C conditions.. He had no sessions for Stage 1 Phase 1 under Class B conditions. Viewer 2, however, had 92 sessions across a number of stages under Class B conditions. As new data are added, a new report that reflects the addition can be generated in a matter of hours. It requires only a day or so to design and test new reports that display different aspects of the data for the simpler data bases and correspondingly longer for the more complex ones.
