Approved For Release 20015, I-RDP96-00788R001100400016-0 8 September 1981 MEMORANDUM FOR: COLONEL BILLY F. MILLER, ADCSOPS-HUMINT SUBJECT: Hypnosis as Possible GRILL FLAME Collection Technique (S) 1. (U) Per your request, I reviewed the documents on file in the SSO facility pertaining to the above subject. 2. (S/NOFORN) We have never used hypnosis in our program. The protocol (approved by the Army Surgeon General's office) under which we operate forbids the use of hypnosis and/or the use of drugs. 3. (S/NOFORN) There has been very little research in the area of hypnosis and its possible effects on parapsychological phenomena. Self-induced states of relaxation is one method that is currently being studied, and since the level of relaxation and concentration an individual achieves seem to influence the results obtained this is an area we have been following with some interest. 4. (C) We have discussed the use of hypnosis, and other states of consciousness with BG(P) Rapmund, Office of Army Surgeon General, and believe he feels that this is an appropriate area for research. Unfortunately, we cannot carry out (nor are we equipped to do so) basic research. Hopefully, this is an area that the Grill Flame DoD Committee will look at in the days ahead.
