AGENCY INVOLVEMENT IN PARANORMAL RESEARCH
" Throughout the ages there has always been curiousity, speculation and
innumerable reported instances of a wide variety of paranormal phenomena--
phenomena which appear to stem from either extraordinary acuity of the
known physical senses or from other 'senses' which perceive our ordinary
reality in other dimensions of time, space and causality. There have also
been cycles of particularly heightened interest from time to time, often
associated with periods of unusual stress or social upheaval in man's
history. It is no secret that we are in the midst of such a cycle at the present
time, not only in this country but in most parts of the world. Under the
circumstances, it would be unusual if well-intentioned people did not occas-
ionally bring to the attention of their government such evidence as they possess
about these phenomena. Quite naturally, such evidence is sometimes referred
to this Agency. When it is presented persuasively by people of undoubted
probity, we would, it seems to me, be negligent if we did not at least view it
objectively- -just as we try to be objective about all matters which affect the
national interests. We are not in the business of pursuing paranormal phenomena
eer se but we try not to be arrogant about it- -which is what a lack of objectivity
about any issue usually amount to.
