It was good to hear from you. I want to wish you
the very best of luck and success in your doctorate program.
I know your family must be very proud of your achievements.
I will continue to approve funding for the agencies
under my direct control, as Chairman of the HUD-Independent
Agencies Subcommittee of the Committee on Appropriations, for
research purposes. I have been a strong proponent of serious
scientific and medical research projects over the years. I
have always voted for health funding, for instance. It is
up to the agencies to decide which research projects they will
fund with the money the Subcommittee approves and which the
Congress eventually votes for them. When I feel they have made
frivolous choices in their research grants, I give them the
"Golden Fleece." Funds for research are always limited. There
are never enough funds for any government project, for that
matter. For that reason I feel it is my duty as the Chairman
of an Appropriations Subcommittee to challenge wasteful and
frivolous use of research money wherever it may be found.
I am sure your endeavors are serious and that you
will advance scientific knowledge. I wish you the best of luck
in the pursuit of your degree and in obtaining funding for your
research.
Sincerely,
is e, u Ste.
