(("the world today" program presented by political observer
georg iy zubkovi 14w, first programs 3675 mh z) )
1 it is almost 10 years since pinochet took power in chile.
the storm of popular anger has been mounting recently and today has
seen the fourth dayo of national protest in as many months.
2 map published in newsweek shown on screen, illustrating the
scale of u.s. central american military maneuvers, based on the
aircraft-carriers ranger and new jersy. fidel castro quoted,
in conversation with journalists, describing the maneuvers as a
cunning ploy: now they are saying they will last 6 months; later they
will say it will be 6 years.
3 today we are able to show you reportage from ndjamena, the
capital of chad. the town, as you can judge from these shots,
is faily deserted, though you can see people in military uniforms.
these are advisers from western powers and soldiers from other
african countries. in chad there are almost 3,000 soldiers and
officers from zaire, and american servicefinen have been sent here,
as have french servicemen. it has become known that in the very
near future franca is to bring the number of its servicemen in
chad up to 500. i shall quote from the newspaper 'le matin':

taking advantages of the flare-up in military actions in chad,
the paper w?ites, reagan has decided to step up american penetration
of africa south of the sahara.
4 'bright star 83': that is the name of the military maneuvers
which have now begun on the territory of egypt and will subsequently
be held in sedan, oman and Somalia. among those taking part in
these large-scale exercises will be almost 5,300 american servicemen
forming part of the interventionist rapid deployment forces.
despite their name the purpose of these bright star maneuvers is
exceedingly shady. bu holding them the united states is striving
for a broadening of the american military presence in this part
of the world in an attempt to foist its diktat on a number of
arab and african countries.
5 the craxi government is today seeking a vote of confidence
in the italian parliament: craxi has spoken of adherence to
nato and of deploying missiles in italy if the geneva talks produce
no result.
6 compilation of Tracts and figures on the magnitude of
protests,. petitions and other actions against nuclear missiles
in western europe.
7 reportage on the latest dike being constructed to protect
holland from the sea. lake/mc 11/2246z aug
