Dear Chris:
Just a note to thank you for the report and for the comments in
your 28 August memorandum. It was a pleasure dealing with you and
Steve, and we have, needless to say, found muCh food for thought in
your observations and recommendations.
I have given wide circulation to the report and asked the DRD
to come up with a plan concerning implementation. We have also asked
all our editors to read it and comment on it, and also asked the
bureau chiefs to forward their thoughts.
I think the effort was very useful and should give us a good
framework for thinking about improvements to our operation.
With regard to the considerable typing job you had to arrange,
although normally a consultant contract implies that the contractor
will submit the report in final form as part of the fee, I have
asked the finance people to approve payment of these typing charges.
Keep your fingers crossed.
Best regards to both of you, and I want to stress that it was
refreshing to get an "outside" professional view of our publication
effort. I hope we can keep in touch.
