DIRKS DEPUTY DIRECTOR FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ? Mr. Dirks was born on 7 March 1936 in New Ulm, Minnesota. In 1958 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following graduation from MIT he attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar receiving a B. Sc. in physics in 1960. During the period 1956-58, while a student at MIT, Mr. Dirks worked as a researcher and analyst for Raytheon Mfg. Company, Ewen Knight Corp., and Edgerton, Germes and Grier. He also worked part-time as a mathematics instructor for the University of Maryland Overseas Program, England, while attending Oxford University. Upon his return to the U.S. in 1960, Mr. Dirks was employed as a physics instructor at Phillips. Academy, Andover, Massachusetts. Mr. Dirks joined the Agency in August 1961 as a physical science intelligence officer in the Office of Scientific Intelligence. In 1964 he was named Chief, Special Projects Staff, where he was responsible for translating USIB requirements into hardware developmental programs. In 1966 Mr. Dirks. was made a staff chief in the Office of Special Projects, with responsibilities for systems analysis and design of intelligence collection systems and for liaison with intergovernmental technical panels. In 1966 he was awarded the Intelli- gence Medal of Merit in recognition of his outstanding performance with OSP. Mr. Dirks was appointed Deputy Director of Special Projects in 1971. In 1973 OSP was redesignated the Office of Development and Engineering (OD & E) and in March of that year Mr. Dirks was named Director, OD & E. Ir.
