1. SIGNIFICANCE: EXTENSIVE BOMB DAMAGE IS OBSERVED IN THE U.S.
EMBASSY COMPOUND. (SWN)
2. REMARKS: THE WESTERN FACADE OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE ANNEX HAS
COLLAPSED, AND TWO SMALL BUILDINGS, ONE PROBABLE GARAGE, AND
ONE SUPPORT BUILDING NEAR THE ANNEX HAVE BEEN HEAVILY DAMAGED.
A LARGE CRATER IS APPROXIMATELY 20 METERS WEST OF THE
ADMINISTRATIVE ANNEX. NO MAJOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE IS APPARENT
TO EITHER THE SENIOR OFFICERS RESIDENCE OR THE CHANCERY. AT
LEAST ONE ROADBLOCK (NOT ON GRAPHIC) HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED JUST
OUTSIDE THE COMPOUND. (SWN)
THE EXPLOSION AT THE EMBASSY OCCURRED AT APPROXIMATELY 0630Z ON
12 DECEMBER. THE EXPLOSIVES WERE APPARENTLY CARRIED INTO THE
COMPOUND ABOARD A SMALL DUMP TRUCK WHICH WAS THEN PARKED NEAR
THE ADMINISTRATIVE ANNEX (CIA CRITIC 1-83 DTG 120644Z AND CIA
CRITIC 2-83 DTG 120755Z). (SECRET
