THE KIEV-CLASS GUIDED MISSILE VTOL AIRCRAFT CARRIER 'MINSK'
(CVHG) IS AT AN OFFSHORE ANCHORAGE NEAR VLADIVOSTOK. THIS
CLASS OF FOUR SUCH SHIPS WAS THE FIRST SOVIET VESSEL DESIGNED
TO CARRY FIXED-WING AIRCRAFT. CONSTRUCTION OF THE MINSK CVHG
WAS STARTED IN DECEMBER 1972 AND BECAME OPERATIONAL IN 1978.
SHE CARRIES A COMPLEMENT OF 28-30 HORMONE HELICOPTERS AND 16-17
FORGER VTOL AIRCRAFT. THE MINSK CVHG DEPLOYED TO THE INDIAN
OCEAN IN 1982 AND APPARENTLY HAD ENGINEERING PROBLEMS ON THE
RETURN LEG OF THE DEPLOYMENT. (SWN)
