SIGNIFICANCE: THE OBSERVATIONtOF THIS U.S.-PRODUCED RADAR
SUGGESTS THE FUTURE-DEPLOYMENT OF THE I-HAWK SURFACE-TO-AIR
MISSILE SYSTEM TO THE WESTERN MILITARY DISTRICT. (SWN)
REMARKS: THE AN/TPS-63, WHICH WAS NEWLY IDENTIFIED AT SIDI
BARRANI AW RADAR FACILITY NORTH 42 NM EAST OF THE
EGYPT-LIBYA BORDER REPORTEDLY HAS BEEN.
ASSOCIATED WITH THE IMPROVED HAWK (I-HAWK) SYSTEM. (SWN)
THIS TACTICAL SURVEILLANCE RADAR WAS NEWLY
OBSERVED, IN EGYPT, AT DAHSHUR SAM SUPPORT FACILITY
NEAR CAIRO. WHILE AT DAHSHUR, THE RADAR WAS
PROBABLY UNDERGOING CHECKOUT AND TESTING. ON IMAGERY OF
THE RADAR WAS NO LONGER PRESENT. THE PRESENCE OF
THIS RADAR AT SIDI BARRANI SUGGESTS THAT THE TESTING PHASE
IS NOW COMPLETE AND THAT EGYPT IS NOW PREPARED TO DEPLOY
THIS RADAR IN SUPPORT OF IMPROVED AIR DEFENSE ALONG THE
BORDER WITH LIBYA. (SWN)
