Vice President of the White House Fellows, Paula Cholmondeley, has invited
you to address the White House Fellows Alumni Association in Washington, D.C.
4-6 May. The suggested format is 10-15 minutes of off-the-record remarks
followed by 10-15 minutes of questions and answers. You could expect an
audience of 175 former White House Fellows from around the country including
members of this year's class. Last year you spoke to the alumni group, and
the Fellows anticipate that the audience makeup will be about the same.
We called the White House Fellows several weeks ago suggesting that if you
spoke at the alumni association meeting this could also take care of your
commitment to speak to the present White House Fellows class. The class plans
to reschedule a meeting with you after canceling the 13 March date in order to
see the Space Shuttle Discovery blast off. However, staff members of the
White House Fellows Office returned our call several days ago recommending
that you speak to the present class separately in order for them to have the
benefit of meeting with you on a more individual basis.
Since you spoke to the alumni association in 1988, and we anticipate the
current class of Fellows will be rescheduling a meeting with you, I recommend
that you decline this invitation. If you agree, attached is a letter for your
signature.

Re: White House Fellows Alumni Annual Reunion
Dear Mr. Webster:
I would like to invite you to speak at the annual meeting of the White House Fellows Alumni
Association. The meeting will be held in Washington, D.C. from May I to May 6, 1989.
Approximately 175 former White House Fellows from around the country will attend. Members
of this year's White House Fellows class will also join us.
As you well know, the White House Fellows Program selects 10 to 15 people each year to serve
as assistants to members of the Cabinet or White House staff. The Fellows are selected on the
basis of their professional achievements, leadership potential and service to others. After their
year in Washington, they normally return to their communities and resume their careers. The
purpose of the annual meeting is to reaquaint ourselves with national policy issues and each
other. Our alumni come from throughout the United States and occupy responsible leadership
positions in government, industry, the professions, academic and the military.
Over the years, we have been fortunate to have very senior government, business, and academic
leaders speak at our annual meeting. Our speakers typically make 10 to 15 minutes of informal
remarks on the most significant issues facing their respective departments or agencies, and
then take another 10 to 15 minutes of questions. All sessions are off-the-record.
At this point, the program agenda is wide open and you could participate at any stage of our two
and a half day meeting. We would be honored to have you visit with us and hope somehow you can
fit us into your demanding schedule. We would be happy to discuss the program in more detail
with a member of your staff. Ken Simon who is assisting me with the reunion will contact you,
