Central Intelligence Agency

1 MAR 1989
I am very pleased that you are honoring the memory of Nathan Hale. His
acts and his mission have meaning for all Americans and they have a special
significance for those of us in intelligence.
We remember Nathan Hale for his part in the American Revolution -- a war
in which the commitment, heroism, and talents of a new people triumphed over
the skill and experience of a traditional world power. We honor his courage,
his strength of will, and his patriotism.
We also know that the importance of Nathan Hale's mission has not
diminished over the centuries. Now as then, intelligence about enemy
capabilities and intentions is vital to protecting a nation's security and
welfare. And despite the technologies we have developed to gather
intelligence from afar, the Central Intelligence Agency still counts on
dedicated, courageous men and women to perform dangerous and difficult
intelligence work in areas around the world.
In 1973 the Central Intelligence Agency erected a statue to Nathan Hale.
It stands just outside our main entrance, not far from a wall in our lobby
where stars represent the Agency men and women who have died in the line of
duty. The statue reminds us that a nation came together from many acts of
Individual heroism. The stars honor those of our colleagues who, like Nathan
Hale, have given their lives for our country, and they signify our continued
dependence as a nation on the courage and patriotism of our people.

Dear Judge Webster:
Office of the Chief
Memorial Affairs Director
Washington DC 20420
The Veterans Administration is planning to place a
memorial to the Revolutionary War patriot Nathan Hale at
the Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island. There
will be a ceremony to unveil the marker on June 6, 1989,
the 234th anniversary of Hale's? birth. Both the memorial
and the ceremony will be simple and dignified, in keeping
with the ideals for which Hale gave his life.
It would be an honor to have you attend the ceremony, or
participate in some other way. For example, there will be
a printed program for the ceremony, and perhaps you would
like to provide us with a letter which could be included.
We will provide you with more specific information as it
becomes available. Meanwhile, if there are any questions,
please feel free to contact me, or Ann Stone of my staff

RE: Speaking Invitation
Veterans Administration Nathan hale Memorial Ceremony
Long Island, New York
6 June 1989
The Chief Memorial Affairs Director of the Veterans Administration,
Wilfred L. Ebel, has invited you to attend a memorial ceremony and the
unveiling of a marker in honor of Nathan Hale at the Cal verton National
Cemetery on Long Island on 6 June 1989. This will be a simple program of one
hour or less during which remarks will probably be given by the Secretary of
Veterans Affairs. The attendees are expected to include the Secretary of the
Army, a local congressional delegation, and heads of the Daughters and Sons of
the American Revolution.
Mr. Ebel suggests that, if you are unable to attend, you might like to
write a letter by the end of April that can be incorporated in the printed
program for the ceremony. The program will consist of several pages and is
being planned as a memento. The President will al so be asked to provide a
letter for it.
I recommend that you decline the invitation to attend the ceremony but
that you offer a letter for the printed program. If you agree, a letter of
regret is attached for your signature.
