The Director of Central Intelligence
Washington, D.C. 20505
National Intelligence Council
General James V. Hartinger
Commander in Chief
North American Aerospace Defense Command
Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado 80914
30 May 1984
Dear General Hartinger,
I was personally very sorry to have missed you on this visit to Colorado
Springs, but nevertheless want you to know that we (the Washington Area
Operations Center Conference Chiefs) were extremely well taken care of by
General Rosenberg and company. I particularly wanted this group to see the
direction being taken by Space Command and to understand the significance of
your role as "tactical warner." Your folks were very good at describing the
necessary contextual basis for tactical decision making and the importance of
the close interaction of intelligence and operations.
Your impact on Space Command and your other commands is very evident and,
while I know that the directions won't change drastically, your retirement
will be a loss to the nation. I hope that plotting is afoot to keep you
involved and wish you the best of all possible success and enjoyment in your
future years.
Most sincerely,
Y\"-- (
