SUBJECT Visit of MGen James C. Pfautz
26 September 1983
1. This note responds to your request for additional
rationale for a visit of MGen Pfautz with the DCI.
2. Mr. Casey and Gen. Pfautz are in frequent contact in NIE
and SNIE deliberation at the NFIB. As Air Force ACS/I, Gen.
Pfautz is the substantive source of many footnotes taken by the
Air Force in the process. They have not had an opportunity to
meet in an informal environment. We believe strongly that an
informal meeting will provide a greater personal understanding
and, in the long run, a smoother and more coherent NIE/SNIE
process.
3. Secondly, a meetir will give Mr. Casey a valuable
opportunity to assess the approach of Gen. Pfautz to common
problems and aid the DCI in formulating ways to apply CIA's
resources to support military commanders. This is a high
priority for the DCI as you, of course, understand well.
