Subject and Participants: Senate Foreign Relations Committee--Philip Christensen, Allison Rosenberg, Nancy Stetson; Senator Tsonyas Staff--Chris Chamberlin; ALA/AF- Subject of the briefing was Southern Africa Regional Security Issues. personnel on three major issues: (1) the insurgency in Angola, (2) the state of the Namibian negotiations, and (3) South Africa internal security policy. Approximately half of the briefing was concerned with the development of UNITA into a major military threat to the Luanda government, and the effect of this insurgency on discussions between Angola and the United States on the issue of Cuban troop withdrawal. fps. Rosenberg and Mr. Christensen were interested in the South African constitutional process. Mr. Christensen asked for our assessment of the various black South African political dissident organizations, specifically the African National Congress. Briefers drew on a recent ALA/AF Intelligence Assessment on the African National Congress, and suggested that Mr. Christensen meet with The briefing was conducted at the SECRET level.
