1. I regret that we are unable to agree to your request to connect your
Data Extraction From Text (DEFT) system to the Special Computer Center VM
systems in the manner you desire.
2. As you know, OIT's strategic direction for connections to our IBM
hosts is the System Network Architecture (SNA). Your proposed connection
would require us to use the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) instead of SNA. We could not guarantee that a TCP/IP interface would
work. Neither do we have systems personnel who are experienced with that
protocol and who could provide support for its DEFT interface.

SUBJECT: DEFT Project IBM-host Connection
1. This memorandum requests permission to connect the Data
Extraction From Text (DEFT) system to the IMS VM/CMS System.
2. Background:
The DEFT system will provide automated assistance to the data
input-analysts in the Agency's Counter-Terrorism Center (CTC)
