MEMORANDUM FOR: FROM: SUBJECT: 21 January 1988 Director of Information Technology Director Current Production and Analytic Support Replacement of CIA FAX Nets S LOGGED 25 .1A11 1. Action Requested: That OIT initiate action to survey the facsimile machines used by CIA offices in the Washington area and then coordinate the replacement of obsolete systems with an Agency-standard machine. 2. Background: In addition to the interagency WASHFAX system, the Operations Center maintains and operates four other facsimile systems that are used to transmit documents between Headquarters and Agency facilities--largely in the Washington Area. As with the main WASHFAX system, these supplementary systems have been in service for many years and are becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. 3. One of our four facsimile nets uses a "dial-up" DACOM unit to communicate with DOD facilities around the country. Until DOD decides on a new facsimile standard, and moves to replace the obsolete DACOM units at all installations with which we communicate, we will have to keep a DACOM machine operational. This machine predates current facsimile standards and can only communicate with other DACOMs. 4. The other three nets are used to communicate with CIA components and thus are subject to our control. Since these machines are operated by a number of different Agency components, we believe that OIT is the most logical office to take the lead in surveying these systems, and coordinating the purchase and installation of replacements.
