Even as I wish you great happiness in your coming retirement, I
must also tell you how sorry your colleagues and friends are to see you
leave FBIS Nicosia Bureau. Since you joined FBIS in Karavas 36 years
ago, you have made life and work easier for literally hundreds of your
co-workers and their families. Many of them remember you as the first
person to welcome them when they arrived in Cyprus. They recall your
quiet cheerfulness and your readiness at all times to help.
Your friends have watched you master greater skills over the
years and take on larger responsibilities. They have .been proud to
see you receive awards for safe driving from the American ambassadors
in Nicosia not just year after year, but decade after decade. You
reflected credit on the bureau as well as on yourself, and people at
FBIS felt safer because they trusted in your skill.
now Chief of Operations Group, commented when he was
bureau chief in 1978 that you "perform a service which by its very
nature is unobtrusive but without which many daily bureau functions
would not get done." He also praised your "devotion to duty" despite
your status as a refugee, "which in other men might have resulted in a
loss of spirit." bureau chief in 1984, said of you:
"No matter what the job, he does his best" and "thus makes an important
contribution to the overall efficiency of this bureau."
As you begin your retirement now, the many friends you have at the
bureau and around the world throughout FBIS join me in wishing you the
very best.
