JIM JENSEN: Secret testimony released yesterday casts
some doubt now about the candor of former CIA Director Richard
Helms. The censored transcript of Senate Foreign Relations
Committee hearings shows Helms admitted he had not kept
the Senate abreast of all agency operations, nor had he mentioned
the desire of the Nixon Administration to topple the leftist
regime of Chile's Salvador Allende.
Another inquiry chaired by Vice President Rockefeller
in Washington today heard testimony from CIA alumnae. Charles
Crawford has that.
CHARLES CRAWFORD: Almost from the first day the former
New York Governor moved into his new office next to the
White House, Vice President Nelson Rockefeller has spent
much of his time heading the Central Intelligence Agency
investigation ordered by President Ford. The inquiry began
following reports the CIA had compiled intelligence files
on some ten thousand Americans and was involved in illegal
domestic surveillance activities. The Vice President insists
the investigation will be no white wash and that all the
Commission members are actively involved, including those
who were absent for today's session.
VICE PRESIDENT NELSON ROCKEFELLER: All witnesses are
recorded, and all minutes of the ?- by the witnesses are
available for discussion --I mean, for reading by those
members who couldn't be here.
CRAWFORD: Today's witnesses included Will Tom R-e-ytnrrn,
a retired Navy Admiciral and Director of the CIA from 1965
to 1966. Denying any knowledge of Illegal activity during
the time he headed the CIA, Rayburn says he sees the current
investigation as useful.
