1. I spoke with Mr. John Mitchell, Counsel to the Congressional
Committee investigating the Katyn Massacre, and he informed me of
the Committee's proposed itinerary in Europe where they are
STATINTL scheduling hearings. This information was then furnished to Mr.
I VWE Division per his request. Mr. Mitchell also informed
me that upon representation of the Department of the Army, which
had also mentioned our interest in the matter, they had returned
to G-2 a memorandum of December 1943 prepared by
on the subject of military intelligence concerning Soviet Russia. Mr.
Mitchell stated that the Committee still kept title to the document
and might find it necessary to recall it, but that he understood our
position and agreed that the document was not pertinent to the Com-
mittee investigation. Certain Congressmen, however, desired to
make some capital out of it. The document was supplied to the

2. Talked with Col. Schmelzer, Chief, Security and Military
Information Branch, G-2, regarding the document, and STAT
he stated that it was in his safe. He was happy to know of General
Smith's request for the document's non-release and is going to in-
form Gen. Bolling, G-2, of the situation.
3. Mr. Berger, Mutual Security Agency, called to state that
he was proposing a meeting of the interested parties to suggest
language revising the Kersten amendment. I stated that it would be
necessary to have the interested parties agree on what they desired
before calling in the lawyers. He informed me that MSA did not
propose to urge language regarding resettlement as this was not
within their charter.
