Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/02/25: CIA-RDP91-00587R000100010045-3 WASHINGTON POST 24 December 1986 OBITUARIES EDWIN ATLEE BUCHANAN, 76. a retired CIA official who be- came president of commercial sales fQr the DeRand Corp a real estate development company in Arlington, died of cancer Dec. 23 at Arlington Hospital, Mr. Buchanan, who lived in Ar- lington, was born into a missionary family in Kobe, Japan. In 1931 he graduated from Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn., and then re- - turned to Japan to teach. Later in the 1930s he moved to California. During World War fl, he was an officer in Naval Intelligence and served in the Pacific After the war he was the U.S. Naval attache in Canton, China. In 1949 Mr Buchanan moved to the Washington area and joined the ?L&.. He remained with the agency until retirino in 1 69 He received the Intelli ence Medal of Merit for work in connection with U.S. ris- oners of war and persons missing in action in Vietnam. Later Mr. uc anan worked for a number of real estate and invest. ment firms in Northern Viginia. He had worked for the DeRand Corp. since about 1980. Mr. Buchanan was a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, the Washington Golf and Country Club and the Japan-Amer- ica Society of Washington. His first wife, the former Kath- erine Jeannette (Jane) Blythe, died in 1956. Survivors include his wife, Bar- bara Bailey Buchanan of Arlington; two children by his first marriage, Kay Blythe Buchanan Stamer of Catskill, N.Y., and Judith Atlee Bu- chanan Sprague of Princeton, W.Va.; one stepson, James Martin Brewbaker of Columbus, Ga.; two sisters, Mary Wilson Buchanan Holmes of Midland, Tex., and Ruth Agnes Buchanan Briggs of Easton, Md.; two brothers, Donald Whittet Buchanan of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Dr. Walter William Buchanan of .Mammoth Lakes, Calif., and eight grandchildren.
