MISSILE-EQUIPPED COMBATANTS
TOEJO-DONG NAVAL BASE AND MISSILE SUPPORT FACILITY, NORTH KOREA
1. (SWN) SIGNIFICANCE: TWO NEW CLASS AND ONE MODIFIED CRUISE
MISSILE-EQUIPPED COMBATANTS WERE OBSERVED TOGETHER AT AN
OPERATIONAL NAVAL BASE FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE VESSELS ARE
PRODUCTS OF A MAJOR SHIPBUILDING/MODIFICATION PROGRAM WHICH
BEGAN IN MID-1980.
2. (SWN) REMARKS: THE SOJU MISSILE ATTACK BOAT (PTG), THE SOHO
FRIGATE (FF), AND THE NAJIN CORVETTE (FFL) WERE OBSERVED
TOGETHER AT TOEJO-DONG NAVAL BASE AND MISSILE SUPPORT FACILITY
FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE THREE VESSELS HAVE
PROBABLY REACHED OPERATIONAL CAFABILITY.
(SWN) THE SOHO FF (FORMERLY KNOWN BY THE NPIC INTERIM
DESIGNATOR NAJ-A) IS A HELICOPTER LANDING PAD-EQUIPPED
CATAMARAN WHICH HAS FOUR STYX CRUISE MISSILE LAUNCHERS (GRAPHIC
1). OTHER MAJOR ARMAMENT INCLUDES ONE PROBABLE 100MM MAIN GUN,
TWO TWIN 57MM DUAL PURPOSE GUNS, AND FOUR R.BU-1200
ANTISUBMARINE ROCKET LAUNCHERS. IT WAS LAUNCHED FROM NAJIN
SHIPYARD NUMBER. 28 IN EARLY 1982 AND CONDUCTED SEA TRIALS IN
MID-1982 IN THE TOEJO-DONG AREA.
(SWN) THE SOJU PTG IS AN INDIGENOUS COPY OF THE SOVIET-BUILT
OSA I-CLASS PTG AND IS EQUIPPED WITH FOUR SS-N-2 (STYX) CRUISE
MISSILE LAUNCHERS (GRAPHIC 2). IT IS ALSO EQUIPPED WITH AN
INDIGENOUSLY-PRODUCED DRUM TILT RADAR-CONTROLLED ANTIAIRCRAFT
SYSTEM. THE SOJU PTG IS FOUR METERS LONGER THAN THE OSA I.
THIS UNIT WAS LAUNCHED FROM NAJIN SHIPYARD NUMBER 28 25X1
IN MID-1981 AND REMAINED AT THE SHIPYARD T 25X1
LEAST OCTOBER 1.982. THREE ADDITIONAL UNITS OF THIS CLASS ARE
UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
(SWN) THE NAJIN FFL UNDERWENT MODIFICATION TO EQUIP IT WITH
TWO STYX CRUISE MISSILE LAUNCHERS AND IMPROVE ITS MAIN GUN
BATTERY AT NAJIN SHIPYARD NUMBER 28 BETWEEN 1980 AND 1982. THE
STYX CRUISE MISSILE LAUNCHERS REPLACED THE TORPEDO TUBES, AND
ITS TWO 100MM MAIN GUNS WERE PROBABLY UPGRADED TO 130MM
