Geospace Systems has developed a computerized video camera
system that can be used to read license plates from passing cars.
At the moment, we are working with the Massachusetts State Police
in an effort to reduce the problem of auto theft in this state.
However, the same system can be used for surveillance of
cars entering and leaving a secure facility. Therefore, we
though the CIA might have some interest in our product.
To catch stolen cars, we plan to install the system at one
or more toll booths here in Massachusetts. The computer contains
a current list of the license plates of wanted cars. (At the
moment, we have a list of about 30,000 stolen plates.) When the
system observes a stolen plate, it "beeps" and automatically
notifies the state police via telephone. The system is very
fast: the time required to read a plate and search the list of
30,000 plates is only one-fifth of a second.
We have tested the system while parked in a van along the
side of a street. License plates have been read from cars moving
at 30 mph, and we believe the system will work at higher speeds.
