DECLARED PNP READY FOR "100 PERCENT" COOPERATION WITH
GOVERNMENT ON RELIEF.
4. AERIAL SURVEY OF JAMAICA BY AMBASSADOR WITH SEAGA
REVEALED AREAS OF MAJOR DAMAGE. EASTERN END OF ISLAND
HARDEST HIT; MOST HOUSING DESTROYED, CROPS FLATTENED. IN
KINGSTON ALL POWER, MOST WATER, MOST TELEPHONES OUT, FOOD
SHORTAGES AT SHELTERS. OTHER AREAS NOT BADLY IMPACTED.
5. HUMAN LOSSES IN JAMAICA HIGH. 19 CONFIRMED DEAD,
300,000 HOMELESS AND ANOTHER 100,000 IN SHELTERS.
6. USG ASSISTANCE FLOWS TO JAMAICA. BY 9/14 OFDA HAD
ALREADY LIFTED IN USD 290,000 WORTH OF COMMODITIES
(PLASTIC SHEETING, TENTS, WATER JUGS, CHAIN SAWS) IN SIX
AIR LIFTS.
7. INTERNATI0NAL COMMUNITY AIDS JAMAICA. CANADA PLANS
USD 1 MILLION RELIEF ASSISTANCE, U.K. SENDING USD
835,000 IN EMERGENCY SUPPLIES. DISASTER RELIEF AGENCIES
WILL MEET WITH SEAGA LATE THIS MORNING TO ASSESS PRIORITY
NEEDS.
