This is in response to your 1 June 1988 letter
concerning the Committee's Audit and Investigation Staff room
401 in Key Building.
Two events have occurred which have delayed the
improvements required for the room. First, there is a survey
in progress throughout Key Building to identify and remove
asbestos. That survey has taken much longer than anticipated
and has caused all physical improvements to be suspended until
its completion. This was completed for the room occupied by
the Committee staff on 9 June 88.
Second, the original plan for the host office of the
Committee to move to our new Headquarters Building in the fall
was changed, and we have now requested that room 401 be brought
up to SCIF standards. We are advised that all related work
will be completed within the next two weeks.
In the interim, a waiver was requested and received in
order for the staff to store SCI material in a four drawer safe
in room 401. For your records, this letter is written
confirmation of that waiver. We understand the safes located
in room 401 have combinations set by your Director of Security
that are held only by the Committee staff.
Please be assured we are very mindful of the
Committee's concerns regarding the security of their material,
and since the staff is located in one of our buildings we are
confident their material is safe. We will stay in close
contact with the staff as the work progresses.
