MNZEL CHIEF COUNSEL TO THE MINORITY On behalf of myself and the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, I want to thank you for your helpful contribution to our recent public hearings concerning the government's handling of defectors from the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc. Your testimony provided the Subcommittee and the public with valuable insight as to the -problems which confront the defector in his efforts to successfully integrate into American society. The Subcommittee hearings clearly revealed significant problems in our nation's handling of these special people who in many instances risked their lives to escape totalitarianism. Your candid public comments underscored their difficulties in resettlement as well as the unique talents that many possess. I hope that as the result of the Subcommittee's work, needed reforms of the resettlement process will come about that will make the life of these freedom seekers that much better. ER 3848X-87 United states senate to discuss possible reforms that the subcommittee is currently considering. Although such recommendations would not be directed at the current defector program of the Intelligence community nevertheless, I believe that their comments would be most helpful as the Subcommittee prepares its report on the defector issue. In closing, I want to again thank you for your cooperation and worthy comments.
