Hockaday, Jr., President and CEO of Hallmark Cards of Kansas City, Missouri, has invited you to speak at a "Steak and Hamburger" dinner on 16 March 1989 to benefit the Genesis School and the Boys and Girls Club in Kansas City. These two organizations provide counseling, education, and other support that frequently re-direct inner city children into the educational and cultural mainstream. Approximately 3,000 children are served in this way. Over the past four years the "Steak and Hamburger" dinner has raised more than $250,000. The audience would consist of more than 1,000 people, including many of the children involved in these programs. Past speakers include the Commandant of Cadets at West Point, the Head Football Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, and Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth. Since you are scheduled to address the Society of Barristers in Naples, Florida on 16 March, a letter of regret is attached for your signature. Hockaday, Jr. President and Chief Executive Officer Hallmark Cards Incorporated Kansas City, Missouri 64108 Dear Irv: Thanks for your invitation to speak at a "Steak and Hamburger" dinner on March 16, 1989, to benefit the Genesis School and the Boys and Girls Club in Kansas City. I would do it in a minute, but I have a long-standing commitment to address the International Society of Barristers in Naples on that day. I have hopes of staying on through the weekend with some old Missourians, including Jim Symington and Charles Guggenheim. You mentioned some flexibility. I'd be glad to explore other dates with you, but my own schedule is always subject to pre-emption and I would regret causing you double trouble. I gather I will be seeing you this weekend and perhaps we could discuss it further. Warmest regards, Sincerely, William H. Hockaday, Jr. President and Chief Executive Officer Hallmark Cards Incorporated Kansas City, Missouri 64108 Dear Mr. Hockaday: Thank you for your invitation to speak at the Steak and Hamburger" dinner for the Genesis School and the Boys and Girls C b in Kansas City on March 16th. Unfortunately, I find that I have a previous speaking engagment of long standing which conflicts with that d e. However, I commend the two organizations for their fine work on behalf of young people, and wish you a most successful evening. I really enjoyed our tennis match a Hilton Head last year. PiefidIHR SOO Chief CRICUtNe Off ger HALLMARK CARDS INCORPORATED - KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI 64106 October 12, 1988 Judge William H. Webster Director Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. 20505 Dear Judge Webster: Since you and I managed to survive a tennis match in Hilton Head with Ambassador Price and Rae Evans' husband, I am emboldened to write on a subject I hope you will consider. There are two organizations in Kansas City which, in combination, serve over 3,000 young inner city boys and girls providing education, counseling and a variety of support which frequently succeeds in re-directing these young people back into the educa- tional and cultural mainstream. These two organizations combine each year to sponsor a novel fundraising event which provides the bulk of the budget for their activities. The two organizations are the Genesis School and' the Boys and Girls Club. The event is a "Steak and Hamburger" dinner whtch is attended by over a thousand people including many of the children served by these agencies. While the children are served steak, the adults eat hamburger. The kids, of course, think this is wonderfully appropriate and funny and the adults are equally enthusiastic about the evening. The highlight is always the speaker and we try to get someone who, in terms of their life, will mean something to these young people. For example, in the past, speakers have included the Commandant of Cadets at West Point; the Head Football Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs and Peter Ueberroth. Over the past four years, this dinner event has raised in excess of $250,000 for these two organizations. You would be a marvelously appropriate speaker for this event. The kids would be awed by your career and I cannot imagine a more ideal role model for them to contemplate. the dinner is tenta- tively scheduled for March 16 but we have some flexibility with that date if a change would better accommodate your schedule. iS Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2012/08/14: CIA-RDP90G01353R002000020012- ' 1.00?' Webster October 12, 1988 1.1,1t_g I make this request as a past Honorary Chairman of the event and out of conviction that it would be a wonderful experience for these young people. Incidentally, one of your colleagues and predecessors at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Clarence Kelley, remains a "favorite son" here and I know he would be thrilled if you were In our midst. I know you have innumerable demands but hope you will find this request particularly worthy. Thanks for your consideration. Sincerely, Irvine 0.
