Milton, has invited you to address AFIO New York sometime this fall. Their meetings are held usually three times a year, Mondays through Thursdays, but on no fixed dates. The proposed format begins with a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m. and follows with remarks on a topic of your choice at 6:00 p.m. The media would not be present unless requested. Last September Mr. Milton invited you to speak, and you declined, asking for a rain check at a future date. (See correspondence opposite.) Since your fall schedule is heavily booked, I recommend that you consider meeting with the group in the spring, possibly for a time when you would need to be in New York. If you agree, a letter of regret is attached for your signature. The proposed format is a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m. Your remarks on a topic of your choice would begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by 30 minutes of questions and answers. Adjournment is at approximately 7:15 p.m. You could expect an audience of approximately200 - 250 AFIO members and their guests, Veterans of the OSS, and the FBI field office representatives. Media would be present upon request. If your schedule allows, you also are invited to a private dinner party to be given in your honor after the program. The AFIO New York Chapter was founded in the 1970s by Mr. Derek Lee. Approximately 150 former intelligence professionals meet three times a year to hear prominent speakers. William Casey spoke to this group in 1984 and Bob Gates spoke in March 1987. Other previous speakers have been Director of the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization Lieutenant General James A. Abrahamson, USAF, William Colby, Vladimir Sakharov, and Arnaud de Borchgrave. Since Bob Gates spoke to this group recently, I believe that you should decline the invitation for the present year, but suggest that the group contact you for the next program year. Furthermore, I think it preferable that you address an AFIO National Convention before you speak to an individual chapter.
