Deputy Chief of Administration for the St. Louis Police Department,
Lieutenant Colonel James J. Hackett, has invited you to address their Third
Annual Memorial Breakfast honoring 146 police officers killed over the years
in the line of duty. The breakfast will be held May 12th at the Clarion Hotel
in St. Louis. You are asked to speak on any subject of your choice for 15 -
20 minutes. Approximately 1600 police officers and their families will attend.
Since you have a speaking engagement at Georgetown University on May 10th
and are planning to attend the ALI meeting in Chicago the following week, I
recommend that you decline this invitation. If you agree, attached is a

Many thanks for your kind invitation to address the breakfast honoring the
police officers killed in the line of duty. I wish it were possible for me to
accept your invitation for May 12th. Unfortunately, I have long-standing
commitments for that time, including travel plans.
Please give my condolences to the families and fellow officers of those
dedicated men who sacrificed their lives to uphold law and order. The city of
St. Louis is a safer place because of their efforts and the citizens have
every reason to be proud of their poi ice force.

On Thursday, May 12, 1988, the St. Louis Police Department
will honor the memory of its 146 police officers killed in
the line of duty. The Z~hird Annual Memorial Breakfast will
be held in the main ballroom of the Clarion Hotel, from 7:30
to 9:00 a.m. We anticipate an attendance of 1600.
As chairman of the Breakfast.Committee, it is my privilege
to invite you to give the main address at the Breakfast.
Please speak on any subject of your choice for approximately
15 to 20 minutes.
I have been advised that your schedule may not be conducive
to honoring our invitation. While I understand that, I have
to hope that the combination of this very special occasion,
and your St. Louis roots, will be persuasive in this heart
felt invitation.
Please know that we are prepared to meet any cost for trans-
portation, accomodations and other expenses you invoke in
our behalf.
