RE: Speaking Invitations Louisiana State Bar Association Annual Convention 4-5 May And Joint Judicial Conference of Fifth & Eleventh Circuits New Orleans, Louisiana, 7 May 1989 President of the Louisiana State Bar Association Wood Brown, III has invited you to address one of the sessions of the Bar Association's 1989 Annual Convention in New Orleans either 4 or 5 May 1989. In addition, Fifth Circuit Judge Alvin B. Rubin has invited you to extend your visit in New Orleans and to address the Joint Judicial Conference of the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits on 7 May. He has indicated that Judge Eugene Davis and Judge Gerald Tjoflat, who-are Program Chairmen for the Conference, have asked him to extend the invitation to you. Judge Tjoflat is also participating in the Eighth Circuit Conference in St. Louis. Since it is too far in the future to make a commitment, I recommend that you decline both of these invitations. If you agree, two letters of regret are attached for your signature, . President Louisiana State Bar Association Post Office Box 50818 New Orleans, Louisiana 70150-0818 Thank you so much for your invitation to speak at the Louisiana State Bar Association's Annual Convention in New Orleans on the 4th or 5th of May, 1989. It was kind of you to think of me, and kind. of Judge Rubin to urge me to accept. I would greatly enjoy a visit to New Orleans and to see old friends there. Unfortunately, it is too far in advance for me to make a definite commitment, and rather than hold you up, I think it best for me to decline so that you-can invite another speaker. Best wishes for a most successful convention. Sincerely yours, William H. I would be delighted to see you and other old friends in New Orleans. However, this is too far in. advance to make a commitment for that period of time, and it seems the better part of wisdom for me to withdraw so that you can locate another appropriate speaker. Webster Director, Central Intelligence Agency Langley, Virginia Dear Judge Webster: The Louisiana State Bar Association will have its 1989 Annual Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 3-6, 1989. We would like very much to have you to speak at one of the sessions of the convention on either the Thursday, May 4, or Friday, May 5. I take this means to extend you an invitation to speak at the convention. One of my partners, Harold B. Carter, was present at the Arkansas State Bar Association Convention on June 10, 1988 and heard you speak and he tells me that the talk was worthwhile listening to. In order to make it more tempting for you to come, I am advised that the conference of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in conjunction. with the conference of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeal will be held in New Orleans beginning on May 7, 1989 and running through May 10. In addition, I am pleased to advise that the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, an annual event which is well=received in this community, will be going on that week and will be available. I am writing early because I suspect that your .calendar for such events is very congested and I would like to be sure that you are aware of this invitation as soon as possible. Moreover, it will give some of=your -(literally) old friends (including me) a chance to visit with you. Indeed, let me go beyond that. If you choose to speak at the State Bar Convention, you might enjoy spending the weekend in New Orleans and staying over to address the Joint Judicial Conference of the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits on Monday, May 7. Judge Eugene Davis,. who is, together with Judge Gerald Tjoflat, Chairman of the Program Committees ?-for- the combined -Fifth and Eleventh Circuit Conference has asked me to ask you to stretch your visit out .for this purpose. .The Conference will be historic: It will be the first "reunion" of the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits., Approximately 200 Article III federal judges, and a host of other judicial officials, lawyer delegates, and national and local bar officials will be present swelling the -total attendance to more than-1000. The Conference will be at the Intercontinental Hotel, where Janice and I usually stay, and it is a very pleasant place.
