SUBJECT: PRG Meeting on Pakistan-Afghanistan, 14 September 1988
Purpose of the briefing was to provide Ambassador Oakley last minute
guidance before he returned to Pakistan. An intelligence briefing was given
on the internal political situation in Pakistan, India/Pakistian relations and
the status of the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan. There was considerable
discussion of the stability of the Pakistan regime. I indicated that there
were some differences among analysts regarding the likelihood that the
military, would postpone the election. provided some background on 25X1
how the military might be able to frustrate the election or if necessary live
with Mrs. Bhutto as Prime Minister. There was some discussion about military
assistance and Soviet cross-border activities. CIA was tasked to provide a
memorandum on Soviet cross-border activities with as much detail as
possible. F---] 25X1
