Gates Deputy Director Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. 20505 January 28, 1987 Dear Dr. Gates: As you are aware, there are more than sixty Hundred Clubs through- out the United States dedicated to actively supporting the fire and police community. In Washington the club is known as Heroes, Inc. The Flint club was founded in 1975 and has steadily grown to a strong, supportive group of 250 members who truly believe in a community taking care of its own. Two years ago Francis Mullen, Drug Enforcement Administrator, spoke to our group and his remarks reaffirmed our commitment. The purpose of our letter is to invite you to be the guest speaker at the summer meeting tentatively scheduled for June 9 (or any date in June), at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Flint. A reception is planned for 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m. The club consists of many top General Motors executives, sup- pliers, local businessmen, college officials, Mott Foundation executives, and government employes. We anticipate an audience of at least 250 people. We could coordinate security with the local office of the F.B.I. and the Flint Police Department and would arrange for your accom- modations at the Hyatt Regency if you wish. I hope your plans will permit your acceptance as we would be pleased to personally meet you and hear first hand the major issues facing your agency. Sincerely, cc: Mrs. Mary Evelyn Dean Public Affairs. CIA Hundred Club of Flint Edward H. Mertz President BUICK MOTOR DIVISION GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION FLINT. Lauder Director, Public Affairs Office 13 February 1987 SUBJECT: Invitation to Speak at the Hundred Club of Flint 1. Action Requested: Accept or decline the invitation to speak at the Hundre Club of int on Tuesday, 9 June, at the Hyatt Regency in Flint, Michigan. 2. Background: Edward Mertz, General Manager of Buick Motor Division and resident of the Hundred Club of Flint, has invited you to be their keynote speaker at a dinner meeting with a reception at 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m. The proposed format is 20 minutes of remarks followed by 15 minutes of Questions and Answers on a topic of your choice. You could expect an audience of approximately 250 members who are leading General Motors executives, suppliers, local businessmen, college officials, Mott Foundation executives, and government employees. Neither foreign nationals nor the media are expected to be present. According to Helen Turi the Public Relations Director for the club and retired employee of Buick Motor Division, John McMahon was scheduled to speak last year but had to cancel due to a conflict. After checking with and PAO records, we are unable to confirm that such a speaking engagement was scheduled. However, Mr. McMahon may have tentatively arranged it through friends in Detroit. There are approximately 65 Hundred Clubs located throughout the world. All are nonprofit organizations patterned after the first Hundred Club (some use other names, such as Bluecoats, Inc. or Heroes, Inc.), founded in 1952 by 100 Detroit, Michigan, men who contributed $100 per year. The Hundred Clubs are service clubs dedicated to raising funds to aid families of firefighters and law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Now, the largest of these is the Hundred Club of Massachusetts. (See opposite for further information.) According to Edward Mertz, the Flint club was founded in 1975 and has steadily grown to a strong, supportive group of 250 members who believe in a community taking care of its own. Several years ago, Drug Enforcement Administrator Francis Mullen spoke to this group.
