Charges link U.S. to Indian spies
tiEW DELHI. India - t' S. intelligence officers op-
erating from the C.S. Embassy paid an Indian bustness~
man to obtain Indian defense secrets, organize protests
against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan and run
an anti-So~?iet propaganda campaign, court document
filed yesterday said.
The documents alleged 'I~iwan officials and \e~
Delhi-based West German diplomats participated to
American efforts to culti~?ate members of the Indian.
Parliament as sources of information. The charge-sheep
named nine Americans and two ~t'est Germans and ca:~
they' were di~lett+.ats.
Three of the parliamentarians identified in the dt,~

Denies Report on Spying

NEW DELHI, Jan. 29 -. The United
States Embassy denied today that any
of its diplomats had ' `engaged in espio-
nage" with an Indian businessman who
was accused Tuesday of Passing se-
crets to several American officials.
The b~inessman, Rama Swaroop,
was named last year as an anent for
Taiwan who passed secrets from In-
dian off[c~als to various foreign oon-
tads. He wa~s specifically charged
formation but~ther~e were fewi details
of what the information was.
In a statement, a United States Em-
bassy spokescran said today that the
United States "denies that any United
States Government officials have en_
8a8~ in espionage activity with Swa-
roop and specifically that any United
States Government official has sought
or received classified information or
documents from Swaroop."
