SUBJECT: Briefing for House Armed Services Committee
Staffer Robert Emmerichs re Nicaragua
1. On 3 March 1986, at 1030 hours, in room 2216 Rayburn
House Office Building, Robert Emmerichs, House Armed Services
staffer, received an update briefing on the current situation
in Nicaragua from African
and Latin American Analysis, Directorate of Intelligence.
2. Mr. Emmerichs said that he knew very little regarding
the situation in Nicaragua, and that he wanted some background
information in preparation for the upcoming hearings that the
Committee would be convening, one in which someone from the
Agency would be the principal witness.
3. proceeded to give Mr. Emmerichs a general
overview on the situation in Nicaragua, using three charts for
comparison. The briefing centered around such things as:
fighting in Nicaragua; shortage of supplies within the FDN;
insurgents aircraft used to fly in supplies; base camps in
Honduras; push by the insurgents back into Nicaragua; problems
with communications; draft dissertion rate; etc.
3. The briefing last approximately 20 minutes and there
were no outstanding items.
