You may have read in the papers about the controversy over
CIA's contacts with academics. I thought you might have a
passing interest in the text of the speech that I gave at Harvard
tackling this issue.
There were perhaps three points of the speech to note:
the admonition that the university cannot protect
academic freedom oblivious to the fortunes of the
nation.
the charge that the university itself endangers freedom
of inquiry when attempting to control the associations
of its scholars, especially with their own government.
the hypocrisy of a university to single out CIA for its
refusal publicly to identify its sponsorship of research
when no other sources of funding (including foreign STAT
governments) are required to be revealed.
It was an interesting experience which I do not intend
to repeat.
