SUBJECT: Briefing of Senator Pell on 4 May 1984
1. Sub'ect and Participants: On 4 May,
an the chie of the Legislative Liaison Staff briefed
Senator Pell and Gerald Christenson, minority staff, Senate
Intelligence Subcommittee. Senator Pell had reauested the
briefing on South African assistance to UNITA.
2. Senator Pell was interested in South African ties to UNITA,
and whether the United States Government provided Savimbi's
movement with aid. reviewed the longstanding 25X1
UNITA-South African relationship, noting that Savimbi receives no
American aid. also discussed UNITA's current military 25X1
campaign in central and northern Angola, and the current military
ballence in Angola. 25X1
