On 3 May 1984, Senate Foreign Relations staffers John Ritch and Cas Yost, along with Chris Chamberlain of Sen. Tsongas' staff were given a half-hour u date on the situation in Afghanistan. The briefers were and from DI/NESA. This was followed by a DO briefing which DI representatives did not attend. 2. The DI briefing concentrated on the recent Soviet offensive in Afghanistan and the impact it is having on the Afghan insurgents. The briefers covered Soviet strategy and tactics, Moscow's lack of success in dealing a severe blow to the insurgents, and possible future courses of action by both Moscow and the insurgents. No follow-up to the briefing is expected.
