MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: SSCI Hearing on the Persian Gulf, 19 June 1987
1. Present from the SSCI were Senators Boren, Cohen,
Specter, Hecht, DeConcini, Bentsen, Bradley and Metzenbaum.
Staffers in attendence included Sven Holmes, Jim Dykstra, Larry
Kettlewell, Natalie Bocock, Blythe Thomas, Charlie Battaglia,
Chris Mellon, Kathleen McGhee, Mike Mattingly, John Despres,
John Nelson, George Tenet, and Regina Genton. A transcript was
taken by Committee reporter Fred Ward. Present from
were Dick Kerr, the Deputy Director for Intelligence;
Directorate of Inte li ence Office of Near Eastern and South
Asian Analysis; and OCA. Other Executive Branch
representatives were DIA; Mike Armacos,
2. Dick Kerr briefed the Committee on the threat in the
Persian Gulf, drawing on the current SNIE. Virtually all
questions were directed at Mr. Armacost and Mr. Gnehn and
concerned US responses should Iran react to the increased US
presence in the Gulf.
