STAT Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/07/30: CIA-RDP90-00806R000201140071-5 UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL 27 MARCH 1983 -1983 Borah Symposium keys on Central America MOSCOW, Idaho A former president, a former ambassador and a former CIA official are among the speakers slated to address this year's Borah Symposium at the University of Idaho. The two-day symposium beginning Monday carries the theme ''Revolution and Intervention in Central America.'' In this case, the former president is Jose Napoleon Duarte, a Christian Democrat who led the government in El Salvador from 1979 to 1982. Also participating is Robert White, who was ambassador to El Salvador until he was dismissed following a policy rift with the Reagan administration shortly after it came to power. Other symposium participants are Cleto Di Giovanni Jr., a 12-year veteran of the CIA and currently a senior research associate of the Advanced International Studies Institute, and Francisco Campbell, first secretary in charge of political affairs for the Nicaraguan Embassy in Washington, D.C. This year's symposium will be moderated by E. Bradford Burns, a Latin American scholar and professor of history at UCLA. On the first night of the symposium, speakers will discuss the causes of violence and revolution in Central America and the prospects for reform. The second night's program will deal with the role of the United States in Central America, including an analysis of current U.S. policy. rXCEPTZEU Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/07/30: CIA-RDP90-00806R000201140071-5
