He will discuss covert wars, with particular emphasis on CIA involvement in Nicaragua and parallels with CIA activi- ties in Angola. Stockwell is the highest-ranked CIA official ever to "de- fed" from the agency. His 14 years (1963-1976) as a CIA field case officer began in Africa, where he rose to become chief of I station; moved to Vietnam, where he was chief of station upcountry. from 1973 through the final evacuation in 1975; and returned to Africa, ' where he was commander of the Angola Task Force. He subsequently spent one year as adviser to the National Security Council before leaving the agency in 1977. Recently, Stockwell has spent time in Nicaragua. I.. Stockwell has charged that the CIA is "the ultimate threat to democracy and a major cause of the world's move to nuclear extinction." He has testified before the U.S. Con- igress in extended session and appeared on CBS's 60 Minutes, I NBC Magazine, and ABC's Jack Anderson: Confidential. Stockwell's best-selling book, In Search of Enemies (W. W. Norton, 1978), depicting the CIA covert war in Angola,- resulted in a lawsuit from the CIA. He was put under a court order requiring that any future writing be submitted to the CIA for censorship, and the government has impounded all profits from the book. Stockwell has also published a novel about Africa, Red Sunset (William Morrow, 1982). Stockwell's talk is being sponsored by the Stanford Central America Action Network (SCAAN) and the Stanford Afri- can Students' Association (SASA).
